If you are looking for more immediate synchronous communication then as well as the phone there are a number of free options that are worthy of consideration.

 

Skype
  has long been the free voice tool of choice. As long as enabling video calls Skype also enables conference voice calls
     
tinychat   enables you to create an instant chatroom in which you can also enable voice and/or video contact thought the recently added Google ads are a bit of a distraction
     
Chatzy   is more basic than tinychat however it has the advantage of not having any ads
