If you are looking for more immediate synchronous communication then as well as the phone there are a number of free options that are worthy of consideration.

 

Skype
  has long been the free voice tool of choice. As long as enabling video calls Skype also enables conference voice calls
     
Google+   has a chat function built in as well as the capability to enable Google Hangouts which works similar to Skype
     
Chatzy   is a quite basic quick setup chatroom that has the advantage of not having any ads
